Lady Bridget (Knightley), a young woman of great beauty and intellect but little fortune, falls in love with a budding officer of the Grenadier Guards named Jamie (McAvoy). In mid-June of that year, the War Office announces that conscription is being introduced for men of certain ages. Jamie knows that he has been singled out for forced service in the front lines for his class and social status. This upsets both him and Bridget, who see their love as something other than a mere wartime romance. In the closing days of 1940, Bridget visits her older sister, Cecilia (Garai), a passionate pacifist, in London. Cecilia takes Bridget to a political meeting where a speaker denounces British propaganda. When Cecilia's young brother Jonathan (Sebastian Rice-Edwards) is killed fighting in the Royal Navy, Bridget approaches the speaker and asks what would happen if all that separates life from death were a single sheet of paper. Witnessing this confrontation is Joe Brean (Redgrave), an older woman who is also present at the meeting. cfa1e77820
