He does however, take a liking to his niece and tries to form a bond with her. The little girl doesn't welcome him with open arms. She resents him for being distant from her mother and looks at him as a stranger. She runs away from the house every time he comes home so as not to see him. It's not fair, she says, as Ravi has been there for her all this while even though he doesn't love her or else he would have tried harder to save Gauri from dying from an accident. As the time goes by, Ravi and his niece become closer and we see them bonding. It's later revealed that Gauri was actually killed and Ravi and his niece don't know this. The two start off living in a small village, but later move to a house in Delhi. He treats her like a daughter and even has her enrolled in school without realizing that she is adopted or about her mother Gauri's death. It is not long before he feels morally bound to realize this, but it's too late... The movie ends with Ravi realizing what he did wrong towards his sister's memory. He decides to go back to his village after he dies from cancer. A lot of people who had seen the movie liked the ending. They thought that Aamir Khan did a great job in making this movie. The movie is Aamir's best grossing movie to date.The time prior to release of the film was quite controversial for one particular reason. Binod Pradhan sued Yash Raj Films for not crediting him in the film even though he had worked on it since January 1998 when Naeem Khan went on a sabbatical, until March 2002 when they finally fired him.
